Chasing the sunset at Lake Victoria, Kisumu

I came for the sunset and stayed until the sky ran out of colours. Lake Victoria in Kisumu does sunsets better than anywhere I’ve been. Here’s how to catch it right

Timing matters. Get there at least 45 minutes before sunset. The best colours come in the 20 minutes after the sun touches the water, which is when most people pack up and leave.

Where to stand: Dunga Beach and Hippo Point both face west over open water. Pick the spot where nothing blocks the horizon. Bring something to sit on, because the ground near the shore gets muddy.
